ABSTRACT

The paper by K. ,). Kohler deals with invariance aud variability in speech timing in general, nud with timing patterns in German in particular. It nrgucs for the need to approach t.imiug from a synt.ngmatic point of view, especially in lnnguages tlmt employ eontrnstive quantity in their phonological ;;yslems. Kohler develops a topdown timing model for speech production in German. The model deals first with the rdntionship between foot ami syllable durations as n function of articulatory complexity and mlmber of syllables in the foot.; Uwn it derives st~gmenL durations from the syllahlc durations geuerat.ecl by the foot-to-syllable nlgorithm.
