ABSTRACT

Inthischapterwewishtointerpretsomeofthemoresalientproceduresand resultsofverballearningresearchintermsofourtheory.AlthoughHAMisreallya theoryaboutlearningandretrievalofpropositionsratherthanlistsofsingleitems, wenonethelessthinkitadvisabletotrytolinkupthetheorywiththeverbal learningresearch.Thisisbecausemostofthelaboratorystudiesofhumanmemory havebeendoneintheverballearningtradition,anditisfromthesethatwehaveour mostreliablefindings.ItiscleartoothatifHAMistoinitiateverymany experimentaltestsofitsclaims,theywillcomelargelyfromthememberswho comprisethis"human-memory"groupratherthanfromthelinguistsorcomputer scientists.Althoughthischapterattemptstointerpretor"translate"someofthe verballearningresultsintermsofthetheoreticalmechanismsofHAM,weshould emphasizethatHAMwasnotspecificallydesignedforthisinterpretivetask,we havenotinvestedasmuchtimeasweshouldhavelikedinthesethoughts,nor shouldthemodelstandorfallonthestrengthoftheseinterpretations.
