ABSTRACT
The data and theoretical issues on semantic memory are briefly outlined. It is concluded that in spite of some very definite achievements the approach taken is no longer fruitful today. A historical analysis attempts to show why the field of semantic memory has developed as it did. Finally, some suggestions are made about how the study of semantic memory could be redirected along more promising lines.
