ABSTRACT

Psychotherapists have traditionally practiced privately or as staff members in health or service institutions. Psychotherapeutic services are becoming more available through the development of new delivery systems. In order to be more accessible to referral sources such as industrial and government Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), some psychotherapists are joining together in private Independent Practice Associations (IPAs) which are essentially group practices. Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) often provide psychotherapeutic services on a contract basis, in conjunction with a wide range of medical services. These are essentially private institutions offering a variety of health services to self-insuring organizations.
