ABSTRACT

When I came home, I, too (ME a nurse!!) was asked how many babies I killed—no one asked me how many babies I (we) saved that were VC casualties, no one cared and no one wanted to know the truth … it wouldn’t jive with the public’s already pre-conceived idea of what we were doing in RVN—so I had to deal with people avoiding me for that reason. NOW—with all the emphasis on Delayed Stress Syndrome—I’m having to deal with people that look at me and expect me to go crazy in front of their eyes simply because I’m a Vietnam Vet. Well I’m sick of being typecasted. Sure, many do have problems, but don’t cast that shadow on all of us! Please! Before I was proud to be a Viet Vet, now I’m becoming embarrassed to say “I am a Viet Vet.” (Quote from a woman Vietnam veteran, 1982)
