ABSTRACT

During the past seven years I have evaluated, treated or supervised the treatment of more than 500 Vietnam combat veterans at the Boston VA Outpatient Clinic. A majority exhibited varying degrees of the delayed stress response syndrome delineated in Section I above. These veterans represent a range of pre- and post-service levels of adjustment, but each in his own style has had to cope with the impact of combat on his life. Although the Vietnam veterans seen in the Boston Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic are certainly a small percentage of the total who served in Vietnam, my clinical and teaching experience with these men has given me an insight into why we do not know more about these veterans.
