ABSTRACT

Interpretation of APD test results may be undertaken for a variety of purposes. Therefore, the goal of the testing first must be taken into account. If the goal of testing is to determine presence versus absence of disorder, that is, to diagnose APD, then the evaluation results should meet a specified diagnostic criterion. Furthermore, only those tests that have been shown to exhibit good sensitivity and specificity for disorders of the central auditory nervous system (CANS), as discussed in chapter 4, should be utilized for diagnostic purposes. Finally, it should always be kept in mind that, because APD is fundamentally an auditory-based deficit, audiologists are the professionals who diagnose APD (ASHA, 2004a, 2005a,b).
