ABSTRACT

The purpose of this final chapter is to present short descriptions and reviews of several commercially published social skills programs. This list of programs is not intended to be an exhaustive list. Instead, it is a sampling of the programs available to help education and mental health professionals teach social skills to school-age children. The programs included in this chapter (which are presented in no particular order) were selected after a number of catalogs devoted to educational and psychological publications and programs were reviewed. Programs were selected for inclusion if they appeared to specifically address teaching social skills to children and adolescents. Programs that did not target school-age children and adolescents (e.g., those programs targeted specifically to preschool-age or adult populations) were not included. Programs targeting a specific population (e.g., children with autism, children of divorced parents) were also not included, although programs targeted toward lower functioning children or children with mild-to-moderate disabilities in general were included. Programs included were those that focus specifically on the development of social skills and social competence (i.e., skills involved in interacting with others), not just those that deal with feelings, anger resolution, and the like, although these aspects are often included as part of a more complete social skills program.
