ABSTRACT
It has often been claimed that information technology is the key to increased white-collar productivity. Reliance on technology as a substitute for human effort worked for the resource industries and for manufacturing; it seemed that the same principle should also apply to office work. Their supposed contribution to productivity became, for a time, the main selling point of computer systems.
