ABSTRACT

To understand the functioning of the proposed mechanism, it must be pointed out that the subject cannot increase at will the total number of his "+" messages; in order to increase the number of "+" messages which he

sends to one of his fellow members, he will have to diminish the number of "+" messages sent to another. Then the following type of relationship occurs: if during the period preceding a given moment subject A received a greatly increased number of "+" messages from subject B, a moderately increased number from subject C, and a slightly increased number from subject D, then subject A will increase his "+" messages to B and decrease them to D, while the number of messages to C will be modified in an intermediate fashion . (1) A and B favor each other more and more as the experiment proceeds, while they both neglect player D more and more; their attitude toward C
