ABSTRACT

The goal of this chapter is to present theory and data that describe a model of argument understanding and conflict resolution. Settling disagreements, dis putes, and differences of opinion are among the most frequent activities that take place during conversational interaction in daily life. Not only do conflicts occur among individuals, but they occur among groups at both the national and international levels. Given the frequency and importance of conflictual interac tion, and the negative consequences that result when negotiations fail, it is critically important that we develop a theory of how arguments and conflicts are understood.
