ABSTRACT
When people estimate the intensity of a stimulus by methods such as Magnitude and Category Estimation, their responses depend not only on the value presented, but also on the psychophysical events that occurred earlier in the series. The patterns exhibited by such sequence effects are complex and, as such, pose challenges for existing theory. The motivation to answer these challenges comes from the promise of securing a deeper understanding of the judgment processes engaged in by subjects when using such methods.
