ABSTRACT

Since the 1940s an extensive body of research has been built up on the psychophysiological basis of antisocial, delinquent, criminal, psychopathic, and violent behavior. For example, there have been at least 150 studies on electrodermal and cardiovascular activity in such populations. This body of research has received little attention in the broader field of criminology, and is rarely if ever referred to in textbooks of crime. This chapter proposes to bring this body of knowledge to wider attention. For readers who have some familiarity with this area, a second aim is to provide an update on recent findings in this literature, highlight some of the more salient issues, and to provide some directives for future research.
