ABSTRACT

The outplacement industry has grown rapidly and impressively since the 1970s. Those in the field have been so busy responding to fast-breaking demands that there has not been much time for evaluating carefully and systematically a whole host of relevant issues. In addition, there are few in the field who are fully trained to conduct behavioral science research. Consequently, although there are many practices that are continued because they appear to work, there are many issues that remain open and deserve more systematic investigation and attention. Hopefully, progress will be made in the years ahead on these issues. R. Lee (1987) divided them into three categories: professional, consulting, and theory and research.
