ABSTRACT

The following hypothesis was advanced in chapter 3 (Hypothesis 2): Cessation or restriction of visual dream-imagery indicates a bilateral lesion in the medial occipito-temporal region. In the light of the case material described in the previous chapter, this hypothesis can now be considered from two points of view: (a) Did both patients with cessation or restriction of visual dream-imagery have lesions in this area? and (b) Did all cases in the series with lesions in this area have cessation or restriction of visual dream-imagery? When considering the hypothesis from these two points of view, we should also bear in mind that it makes two separate predictions: (a) that nonvisual dreaming is invariably associated with bilateral cerebral lesions, and (b) that the lesions always include the medial occipito-temporal region.
