ABSTRACT

The dramatic phenomena reported in the previous chapter are highly remi niscent of those discussed in the literature review under the heading of in creased frequency and vivacity of dreaming. However, the defining feature of our cases appears to be “difficulty distinguishing dreams from reality and vice versa” (Morris et al., 1992, p. 1834), rather than increased frequency and vi vacity of dreaming per se. The essential difficulty that we observed is exempli fied by the following episode described in the literature:

The phrase increased frequency and vivacity of dreaming might therefore be a misnomer. Many of these patients did not experience increased frequency or

vivacity of dreaming as such but rather a difficulty in distinguishing their dreams from real perceptions.
