ABSTRACT

M maintain. Maintain is never an intransitive verb; it always

takes an object. Therefore, one can never say that the increase in hippocampal activity maintained across all experimental sessions. Instead, one should say that the increase held, that it persisted, or that it remained at a certain level-or perhaps that it was maintained; but only if someone or something actually did maintain it. There can be no good reason to endow maintain with an intransitive meaning when there are already several commonly accepted, clear and concise words in En-

glish that serve the same purpose.
