ABSTRACT

Until a year ago, I was one of those slobs who thought all infants ugly. But as I write, my first child, Ruth, born last January, is climbing the stairs. Is it the greatest thing ever? Hard to tell. Two weeks ago she mastered clapping…. Everything she says–for example, “ah-yee-dee-dee-dah”–makes more sense than all the people I interview. Don’t get the idea that I like being a father; it’s simply the best experience of my life.
