ABSTRACT

Psychophysiologists have utilized a number of psychological and/or personality dichotomies to study physiologic differences among subjects and patients. For example, differences have been noted with ego strength, anxiety scores, various affects, and so forth. Similarly, my colleagues and I have found psychophysiologic differences among subjects who differ along the field dependence independence dimension. This chapter reviews and summarizes a number of studies we have conducted in this area. Included are studies related to: social isolation and sensory deprivation; uncertainty versus certainty of environmental stimulation; response to insulin-induced hypoglycemia; venous pressure and venous flow rate; cold pressor test; autonomic drug stimulation; alcohol stimulation; and brain lateralization.
