ABSTRACT

As a result of over 40 multivariate studies conducted over the last several decades, there is now convincing evidence that childhood psychopathology can be divided along two dimensions comprised of externalizing and internalizing symptoms (Achenbach & Edelbrock, 1978). Externalizing problems are characterized by undercontrolled, acting-out behaviors such as overactivity and aggression, whereas internalizing problems include withdrawal, anxiety, and depression.
