The morbidity and mortality is comparable to such diseases as hypertension, coronary artery disease, and diabetes mellitus. The suffering that results in diminished work productivity, familial stress or loss, and, frequently, suicide, wreaks a tremendous toll not only on individuals but also on families and society.
