ABSTRACT

Cultivation of Cannabis sativa, the marijuana plant, in both tropical and temperate climates can be traced back thousands of years. Its ability to alter mood and the use of its fiber in making linen, canvas, and rope have made it a desirable crop. Mood-altering effects are obtained through eating, smoking, chewing, or drinking. In the Americas it appeared as early as 1545, grown in Virginia around 1607 by the Jamestown settlers, and introduced into England about a decade later.
