ABSTRACT

Through Deceomber 31, 2000, 774,467 cases of AIDS in the United States had been reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with 277,400 persons alive in the United States with this diagnosis. The prevalence of AIDS had increased by 11 percent between 1995 and 1996. In 1996, the incidence and deaths due to AIDS started to decrease; however, between 1998 and 2000, these figures leveled off, and the prevalence of AIDS increased.
