ABSTRACT

The preceding review highlights why the relationship of African-American women and mental health or other members of the team is often problematic. Despite ongoing calls for culturally competent interventions, there is limited examination of how this occurs in the client-social worker relationship and in the delivery of care. Ka'opua's (1992) curriculum provides a framework for understanding the value conflicts between providers of Western health care and patients who do not share the same assumptions. Providers frequently are oblivious to this dynamic. They must first become aware of the value conflicts and then engage in a collaborative process with patients.
