ABSTRACT

In June 1985, George was referred to the immigrant program for an enrollment interview by his caseworker at the African Services Committee, a community-based organization (CBO) serving African emigres to the United States. A major concern of the C B O was a financial problem regarding its client and a large hospital bill that was paid by his sister. A n appointment was made within the week, and the patient appeared promptly on the appointed day-an impeccably dressed, tall, slim African man, who carried himself in a regal, if not haughty, manner. He spoke English very well, though his preferred language was French. He related the following personal history.
