ABSTRACT

In some ways, I believe many of us think Lawrence prepared us for the future. That feeling was confirmed just recently when three of the young people from Green Chimneys went to the doctor to obtain the results of their HIV tests. Although one staff member accompanied them to obtain the test results (at their request), the remainder of us staff who were at the residence waiting for them to return, held our collective breath and said silent prayers. As soon as they returned, we met individually with the boys and then as a group to discuss their status. Two of them informed us that they were positive, while one remained negative. I could not help but remember Lawrence when these young men told us that they were infected with HIV. They are only seventeen years old. This is not supposed to happen to teenagers-and so the story and our work continues.
