ABSTRACT

The drug sildenafil citrate was approved by the Food and Drug Administration on March 27, 1998, under the brand name Viagra, for the treatment of male erectile dysfunction, more commonly referred to as impotence. Viagra, patented and sold by the pharma ceutical company Pfizer, quickly became the fastest-selling drug in American medical history and has been heralded in popular media as a pill that could revolutionize men’s sexual relationships with women. In its first four months on the market, demand for Viagra in the United States exceeded 1.5 million prescriptions, and the drug has been forecast to reach one billion dollars in sales during its first year.1
