ABSTRACT

Since the early eighties we can observe a growing tendency among Japanese enterprises to gradually shift their focus of attention and activities from Western markets to those of Pacific Asia. In Japan this is often referred to as datsu-ô nyû-a, which can be translated as “goodbye West, here we are Asia”, a reverse of the movement after World War II when Japan distanced herself from Asia and sought shelter with the West. (1) There are a number of reasons which contributed to this shift.
