ABSTRACT

Knowing an experience presupposes the employment of imaginative capacity. With imagination, reality becomes an object of awareness. By means of visual, verbal, somatic, and affective representations the psyche-soma weaves internal and external impressions into meaningful experience. One's sense of being — one's ongoing contact with life energy and meaning — hinges upon the continual recombination of psychic imagery into new patterns. Dynamic imaginative functioning ensures continuity of meaning and vitality. Thus, the promotion of dynamic symbolic functioning is the goal of analysis. In the analytic field, we place our faith in the symbolic power of images for constructing a meaningfully experienced world.
