ABSTRACT
This subject-matter is one on which most participants at most conferences (rightly or wrongly) feel qualified to comment. Whereas in a discussion of ‘origins’ participants may feel alienated by the intrusion of non-archaeological specialisms (primatology, cognitive development), here they encounter an aspect of contemporary modern culture – the social context in which we all work and live day-by-day – that of ‘the heritage’.
