ABSTRACT

Archaeology combines many o f the modes o f active and integrated learning that are the focus o f modern educational theory. At the same time, an enhanced popular perception o f the importance o f archaeology can only benefit a profession long starved o f public funding, and whose major resource is diminishing at an alarming rate in the face o f rapid urban and suburban development in many parts o f the globe. Yet it is only recently that there has been a coordinated effort on the part o f archaeologists, at least in North America, to encourage appreciation o f the past through participa tion in excavation, analysis, and heritage conservation on the part o f the public in general, and prcunivcrsity students in particular.
