ABSTRACT

In chapter 3 , we introduced a conceptual model that illustrates many of the connections between various family relationships and the three dimensions of religion (religious practices, spiritual beliefs, and faith community). In chapter 4 , we took a closer look at the connections between the marriage relationship and the three dimensions of religion-with an in-depth examination of spiritual beliefs in chapter 5 . In the present chapter, we turn our focus and attention to parent-child relationships. More specifi cally, we examine how the three dimensions of religion infl uence (1) the mother-child relationship and (2) the father-child relationship (see Figure 6.1). We begin by looking at the connection between religious practices and the mother-child bond.
