ABSTRACT

This chapter depicts students’ reflections on their perceptions and emotions as they begin a

new course of study in university. To understand the varied educational backdrop that affects

today’s learner, an initial commentary is made on historical and societal movement in adult

education and training. Thereafter, more personal and practical commentaries expose the

concept of ‘being and belonging’ in new and unfamiliar environments and reveal how ‘sup-

portive networks’ underpin effective learning. Within the chapter, recognition is made that

change is unsettling, and through reflection on the students’ stories the transferability of

feelings and emotions are acknowledged, as are the numerous opportunities that support

and strengthen study aspirations.
