ABSTRACT
Through discussion and case studies this chapter will help you to think about the potential
challenge to practitioners that arises from the increasing trend of young people choosing to
read on-screen print via devices such as smart phones, tablets and consoles, for example, in
preference to paper print. Research has revealed that there has been a year-on-year increase
in children choosing to read daily using an electronic device, such as text messages, websites,
instant messages and e-books (Clark, 2014). The same research also suggests that a link
exists between the greater involvement with on-screen print and low levels of both reading
attainment and reading for enjoyment. Therefore, the challenges for practitioners addressed
in this chapter are two-fold:
x How can practitioners develop and adapt long-established literacy practices and pedagogies with young children to encompass and build on the competencies that interaction
with screen print allows?
