ABSTRACT
Silence, we hold, is a socially constructed space in which subjects and words normally used in everyday life are not spoken. The circle around this space is described by groups of people who at one point in time deem it appropriate that there is a difference between the sayable and the unsayable, or the spoken, and the unspoken, and that such a distinction can and should be maintained and observed over time. 1
