ABSTRACT
This chapter looks at how to help pupils develop a sound understanding of calculating involving addition and subtraction (multiplication and division are addressed in the next chapter). There are two aspects of arithmetical understanding that we need to foster:
when to do a particular type of calculation, be it addition, subtraction, multiplication or division;
how to carry out the calculation.
