ABSTRACT
This chapter continues to examine how to help pupils develop a sound understanding of calculating, complementing the previous chapter by turning attention to multiplicative reasoning. As with the discussion of additive reasoning, the idea here is to go beyond simply looking at the techniques for carrying out multiplication and division calculations and to consider what it means to understand the ideas behind thinking about quantities and the relationships between them in multiplicative terms.
