ABSTRACT

High-quality schools ensure that students master basic academic skills such as reading and math. If students fall behind in developing these skills, they are provided with academic supports that range from a little extra practice to inclusion in special education. Students who struggle academically are provided with these learning supports because educators believe that students’ long-term success at school and in life is largely dependent on the successful development and application of academic skills. In fact, many educators consider teaching academic skills to be the main, if not, the key mission for schools.
