ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the plight of these students as well as ways that educators can help them. Other vulnerable populations have been discussed in previous chapters (e.g., students with mental health problems, LGBT students, etc.); however, homeless students, students who are in foster care settings, and students who are in juvenile and criminal justice systems share a unique vulnerability that places them at a distinct risk. Essentially, they have all experienced environmental instability and likely have had their academic, family, and community stability challenged. Although highly vulnerable and at-risk students face formidable challenges, educators can do a lot to help stabilize these students and help protect them from experiencing negative academic and life outcomes.
