ABSTRACT

Because of this key aim children who are inpatients should receive well-planned treatment and regular reviews to ensure that they can return to families and their lives as soon as is safe. Along with the members of the interprofessional team, children’s nurses are pivotal in ensuring the delivery of high-quality, holistic care. This chapter will, with the use of a case study allow insight into some of the care issues within the children’s medical ward, highlighting some of the key aspects of care that may be encountered. It has to be acknowledged that, in many hospitals, children’s wards combine the care of children with medical needs and surgical needs in one area. This is cost effective in relation to management of staff and also has the added benefit of producing nurses who have skills which are transferrable in any setting.
