ABSTRACT

In this chapter is described the variety of services and supports for children and youth with mental retardation. The topics presented are the prevention of mental retardation through biological and psychological means; services to the preschool-aged child—primarily diagnostic and educational, the latter including a review of the “efficacy” of early childhood intervention programs; services to school-aged children and youth, organized in terms of the “what,” “where,” and “how” of special education; leisure education; and noneducational services—recreational, family-support, and medical.
