Nearly all of Classical Greek and Roman philosophy is lost to the West after the sacking of Rome and the burning of the great library at Alexandria in the 4th and 5th centuries. The writings that do survive are those that are carried by Constantine to the new Christian Byzantine capital and those brought to the Arabic peninsula by scholars fleeing the fighting in Alexandria.
