ABSTRACT
Alain Touraine has always stood the test of modernity: as a critic when Western modernity was arrogantly triumphant; as a defender of a fully fledged modernity when historical pessimism and radical turbulence were rife. His intellectual itinerary has been guided by his determination to extricate a conflictory conception of a modernity shaken by the events that have upset the contemporary world.
