ABSTRACT

It can be seen that within the last thirty years a number of important changes have taken place in music in education, not least the realization (especially in secondary education) that the music curriculum has a role to play in the educative process of all pupils, and not only for the talented minority. Music specialists in secondary schools are usually overburdened teachers attempting to foster and monitor a wide range of activities which take place outside the normal timetable; nevertheless they have shown a growing awareness that it is the classroom music which directly affects all pupils. In the past (largely as a result of teachers’ personal enthusiasms being reflected in extra-timetable activities) this was a neglected area; the balance is being redressed.
