ABSTRACT

The metaphors we construct, adopt and employ in our academic geographical texts sometimes escape from these confines and affect a wider scene, with social and political consequences that can be dramatic and even tragic. This chapter sets out to explore one such metaphor: the metaphor of the state as a spatial organism first developed by Ratzel in his paper in Petermanns Mitteilungen in 1896 (Ratzel 1896).
