ABSTRACT

The goal of this study was to compare personality differences as measured by the Behn-Rorschach, for psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers who applied for training at the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health in New York City. Comparisons of the three major mental health professions have been made in terms of income (the difference between the income of psychologists and psychiatrists in the U.S. is about $20,000 a year.), training (“The psychologist has no M.D.”, or conversely, “The psychiatrist has no Ph.D.”), and job descriptions (“The psychologist doesn’t prescribe drugs, the psychiatrist doesn’t give tests, and the social worker doesn’t do either.”). We have not been able, however, to find any empirical investigations of personality differences between practitioners of the three mental health disciplines.
