ABSTRACT

My present interpretation o f these experiments is that they attempt to observe the construction o f new mental entities, which I call models, and my hypothesis is that this is done by assimilation to very simple schemes that reflect preacquired models. This admittedly Kantian notion o f assimilation is central in Piaget’s theory, and as Papert (1980) puts it: “ Piaget him self did not do full justice to it” (p. 64)— and as Moore and Newell (1974) put it: “ the theoretical notions behind (assimilation and accommodation) eg schema, have little substance in terms of information processing structure (p. 2 23 ).” Present research has to do with taking a closer look at Piaget’s machinery (assimilation, accommodation, schemes, and structures) in a more “ concrete” setting and on a smaller scale.
