ABSTRACT
There has been a trend in Piaget’s recent work and in Inhelder’s own research on “strategies and procedures” toward putting more emphasis on how previous knowledge is used to build new knowledge. This means the situations studied are of a type much closer to problem solving: where there is more procedural or combinatorial distance between the question and the answer; where constructing the answer means combining the known to produce the new.
