ABSTRACT

“Midlife crisis,” “burnout,” “ennui,” and “depression” face many of us when the work challenge is no longer balanced by internal satisfactions, with or without the economic or social need to continue with what we have been doing for most of our lives. This is not a problem related solely to medical practice, since “burnout” has been described as a factor in 45 percent of corporate workers (Golembiewski 1985).
