ABSTRACT

A considerable literature exists on the effects of behavior, stress, and personality types in the development and perpetuation of hypertension. Although many questions persist, it does at least seem clear that the behavioral factor must be considered in the mosaic of the predisposition, precipitation, and perpetuation of this disorder. It is not our intention in this brief chapter to review the current status of these sequences, but rather to examine our more recent efforts to look at the other side of the coin, namely the effects of hypertension and indeed its treatment on behavior.
